Sea Within A Sea [the yellow wallpaper]

The Yellow Wallpaper!

Having been given the prompt of "unstable," I took an opportunity to do a piece based on the short story by Charlotte Perkin Gilman, which is one of my favorite short stories ever. And the only one I've encountered that gets creepier every time I reread it.

The pattern is originally drawn in mechanical pencil on a piece of computer paper. Scanned into Photoshop, and a multiply layer of yellow added over it. Printed out, acrylic and gesso and color pencil applied haphazardly, and then crumpled the paper up until it was nearly soft. Applied to a 8x10 wood panel with gesso, extra pieces of patterned paper used to edge the panel. A piece of very light grain sandpaper was used to scuff up some of the paper.

Born This Way [album art]

I wanted to do extra credit for my Type & Image class. I asked myself, "What should I do? A movie poster, a book cover?" And then Lady Gaga released the album art for her Born This Way. And my question was answered.

I don't have a problem with the Gaga-motorcycle combination, as odd as it is. I have a problem with the little flares all over everything. And the text. Lord do I have a problem with the text. So I made my own BTW cover, including both the current shoulder spikes Gaga has been sporting and a nod to the music video for "Born This Way," where she sports a skeleton ensemble and a marvelous ponytail.

The photo of Gaga belongs to the Haus of GaGa, and is from the cover for the "Born This Way" single.

O Death [a tree and a pile of legs]

Assignment for Type & Image, to illustrate a definition from Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary. I chose the word limb. As was only natural, I drew a leg tree.
